Ethnographic examples of property restitution

In the last years, some attempts for property restitution have been discussed extensively in Russian media such as the 200 churches program in Moscow, the return of St. Isaac’s Cathedral to the ROC in St. Petersburg and the restitution of the central church complex in Ekaterinburg. But this is not the focus of this chapter. The ethnographic examples provided here originate from the Vladimir region and to related discourses during fieldwork between 2013 and 2016. They are not so widely circulated in the national media but show basic challenges equally well. Even more important is the fact that the persons involved were accessible, which is more difficult in other cases when the persons involved had to be careful about their image in national media. In addition, the examples provided here represent a big range of possible arrangements that indicate ideological convergence, personal and institutional entanglements, cooperation, competition and open conflict.
